Brazilian GP: A thrilling finale

06 Nov

Rain spiced up the start and finish of the final race of the 2008 season. And man, did it make it interesting. What a thrilling finale to a great championship. Just three minutes before the start a short burst of rains opened up over the track. Race control delayed the start of the race by ten minutes so that teams can change to wets. The start was not too dramatic Massa got off to a great start. But a safety car came out for David’s crash (sad way to end a career :-( ). Lewis tried to follow the same strategy as Massa but it cost him a couple of places. But after about a dozen laps he overtook Fisi to get fifth and a safe position.

After that the race was pretty boring with Massa set to win the race but Hamilton the championship running fourth. But the rain gods wanted to spice things up again. Rain returned on the 63rd lap. In a few laps the top runners pitted. Massa pitting last but maintaining his lead. Hamilton had Vettel right behind him and taking the fight to him. Vettel took the lead. In the meanwhile the Toyotas had not stopped and Glock slipped ahead of the Hamilton Vettel duo!

Now Hamilton was sixth and out of the championship. Watch the video above to see what happened! It is incredible. Glock could not keep the pace as rain picked up and he was way slower than the pursuing duo of Vettel Hamilton. Hamilton passed Glock in the final corner of the final lap to clinch the World Championship! For a brief moment Massa, his family and Ferrari thought Massa was champion. It was heartbreaking to see their reactions when they realized the truth.

Hamilton becomes the youngest world champion taking it away from Alonso. Congratulations to him. Massa was gracious in defeat. Hopefully its Massa’s turn next year.
