I have been getting some weird comment spam lately. Check out the above two comments for this post. It looks relevant plus got my name right. They are posted from different IP addresses and the site link points to different urls: http://www.treadmill-online.com/ and http://www.isitbirdflu.com/. Both of these actually point to the same blog like site with a lot of google ads! Obviously splogs.
I am thinking, I got captcha enabled in the comments section. But we know that this can be easily handled by a bot. But the related comments? Well initially these comments ended up in the wrong posts. I can not decide if this is a bot or a human making these comments. Could be a combination of these two?
Anyone else get these types of comment spam? What do you think of these?
Update: Comment spam puts comment spam on notice. Check this out, a comment spam for this post. Very funny. Of course it points to the same site.

hey vasanth, were those comments spam? they looked quite relevant to ur post. they didn’t seem unwanted. it seemed as if someone read ur post and commented on it! generally spams are irrelivent. these were strange!

Yes they were spam. I read in some blog that it is simple to create programs that can read captcha i.e., the code shown below.

Hi Vasanth
Just wanna say that even if spammer is promoting his site via your site without harming your site and writing irrelevant about your site that means he is indirectly promoting your site as well, Not compulsory that a spammer can harm your site only he can rather promote your site as well by providing link of your site on his site! Wanna say something!!

Theres always two sides in an argument. And it depends on how one looks at things. I see SPAM as annoying and unacceptable. And I don’t think that a link in a splog will be a publicity for my site, it would be a demoter
Now I understand why Blogger’s captchas are tough to interpret even though sometimes it makes people go mad.

Hmmm… I think I will leave the comments alone after this. Anyway the links does have ‘ rel="nofollow"’ in them. So it will not do much to promote these sites.

Regarding that the comments seem relevant: ELIZA is now 40 years old and already made remarks that "felt" relevant. An enhanced version to create comments like the ones above should be possible. At least to create them semi-automatically.
Concerning captcha circumvention: There is a good section about this on the wikipedia page. It can be done either manually (I find the pron hack to be particular funny) or automated. The captcha below this post looks like a simple noise filter should almost be enough to make it OCRable.

Some rather interesting spam comments there. Is the Captcha feature provided by DasBlog?
BTW, I’m back to surfing blogs after a 6 month stint and wanted to catch up on the rest of your blog but keep getting errors on your archived posts.
