A couple of days back I asked “Whats with Firefox and Java?”. A comment on the post by Dion Gillard pointed towards AdBlock Plus, an extension to remove ads from websites. I did a check and found out that this indeed was the culprit. So the culprit is neither Firefox nor Java. Hmmm…
Come to think of it, I accused Firefox too quickly. This is just like how people complain about Windows being unstable and that it crashed often. Mostly it is an application or driver that causes the problems.
I guess Firefox is becoming more of a platform than a mere browser. There must be thousands of extensions for Firefox. A few of them are full blown applications.
As for the solution to Java applet problem I think I will use Internet Explorer for the applet.

Are you sure there is no other reason? I experience the same problem with Java applets even when I am running only a plain vanilla installation of Firefox with no extensions at all.
