Every time I visit a page with a Java applet in it Firefox freezes and the CPU usage shoots up to 100%! I don’t know if this is a bug in Firefox or one of the many extensions I use. But it happens in all three of my computers.
Usually things get back to normal after the crash provided I do not visit the page with Java applet again. But recently Firefox’s CPU usage shoots up to 100% even after restarting from crash. I don’t want to disable Java altogether as the Formula One live timings from formula1.com is served by a Java applet.
I think I have to start with a fresh install of Firefox and find out who the culprit is.

I think that is a Firefox problem, i happens in all my computers too. I don´t belive that a fresh instalation will resolve this lack, but if you get it, please post it.

It is Java 6 beta at home though I also have Java 5 installed. At office it is only Java 5.

I see similar behaviour – but it depends on the applet. One page I visit regularly has two applets, by removing one (with Platypus and Greasemonkey) the page loads fine – including the other applet.
Strange.

Gavin,
That’s an interesting comment.
Anyway I just need a single page with an applet to be shown. I do not care about others. So I think I will use IETab for that page and disable java in Firefox.

Do you have AdBlock installed as an extension?
If you do, disable it and see if that’s the issue. It has been for lots of others I know.

dion gillard,
Yes I have AdBlock Plus installed. Thanks for the tip. That saved me a lot time in figuring out ‘who the culprit is’. It indeed is AdBlock Plus. Hmmm…
