Wow what a season opener! The Ferrari are back on top with a 1-2 in qualifying and second place in the race but still Renault are the team to beat. But competiton seems a lot closer this year with Renault, Ferrari, McLaren and Honda almost equally matched.
The new style qualifying was a lot of fun to watch. The knock out sessions was fun with Kimi’s crash adding to the drama in the first session. This saw all the cars turning to the track and trying to set a time to stay in contention.
The second session was more normal with top teams waiting till the end to run their cars. In the first two sessions the drivers were not pushing to the limits as expected. They just were content in getting a time to avoid elimination.
The final session in which the top ten cars duke it out was fun. The rule is that they start the session with the race fuel and that they will be given back the fuel they spend in the session before the race started. This saw a lot of running from all the teams to lighten the load and finally set a fast lap. The fight for pole between teammates Michael and Massa was good.
I missed the first half of the race thanks to Bangalore’s great electricity service but the rest of the race was fun too. The Renault team pulled a Ferrari move on Ferrari with the good team work and well timed pit stop strategy. Well done Team Renault. They are still the team to beat.
But the great take away from the race for Ferrari fans like me are that Ferrari are a lot lot closer this year. Hopefully they build on this start and start winning races. My gut feeling is that we can see some Schumi Magic in a week’s time in Malaysia.
One interesting fact from the race is that there are four Bridgestone shod cars in the top six fastest laps! Like Alonso said the Bridgestone tires have an advantage at the end of the stints while Michelin have an advantage with fresh tires. Hope Ferrari change their strategy and concentrate on the race by sacrificing on qualifying a bit.
